WACE Biology, Year 11 (Unit 1)

Biology ATAR opens by zooming out to the whole-ecosystem scale before it zooms in — Unit 1 is about how living things are classified, how energy and matter move through an ecosystem, and how populations and communities change over time. It's a genuinely different starting point from Human Biology, which goes straight to the human body — Biology's Unit 1 is closer to environmental science, and suits a student who finds systems and field-based thinking more engaging than physiology specifically. Note: this page currently covers Unit 1 only — Unit 2 content isn't yet in our dataset, so treat this as a partial picture of the full Year 11 course.

Unit 1

Classification, ecosystems, energy flow and human impact.

Biodiversity and classification

Understanding biodiversity at different scales and how it's used to classify living things.

Naming and classifying organisms (taxonomy)

Using taxonomic classification and binomial nomenclature to name and group organisms.

Measuring biodiversity (sampling methods)

Using field sampling techniques to measure and estimate biodiversity in a real ecosystem.

Ecosystems and habitats

Describing the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem and how they define a habitat.

Food chains and trophic levels

Tracking energy flow through an ecosystem using food chains and trophic levels.

Food webs and ecological pyramids

Analysing food webs and ecological pyramids to understand productivity within an ecosystem.

Where students get stuck: Assuming energy transfers efficiently between trophic levels. Only a small fraction of energy passes to the next level — this inefficiency is precisely why food chains rarely extend beyond four or five levels, and it's a common gap in otherwise solid answers.

How matter cycles through an ecosystem

Explaining how matter, unlike energy, cycles repeatedly through an ecosystem rather than being lost.

Population growth and carrying capacity

Analysing how populations grow and are limited by a habitat's carrying capacity.

Interactions between organisms (competition, predation)

Classifying the different types of interactions between organisms within a community — competition, predation, symbiosis.

Ecological succession

Explaining how an ecosystem changes over time through the stages of ecological succession.

Human impact and conservation

Evaluating human impact on ecosystems and the methods used to measure and manage that change.

How it is assessed

  • Unit 1 and Unit 2 are entirely school-assessed — there is no external exam in Year 11.
  • A satisfactory result in both units is required to move on to Unit 3 and Unit 4 in Year 12.
  • Reporting is against the WACE unit grade for each unit, not an ATAR score — the ATAR is calculated from Year 12 results only.

Common questions

Has this syllabus changed recently?
WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. Check senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au for the current syllabus version of this specific course before relying on unit content for assessment planning.
Why does this page only cover Unit 1?
It's a genuine gap in our current content, not a claim that Unit 2 doesn't exist. Unit 2 (cells, genetics and reproduction, typically) is part of the real Year 11 Biology course — we just haven't written that portion yet.
How is Biology different from Human Biology?
They're two separate WACE courses, not the same course under different names. Biology (this course) is broader ecosystem and organism-level biology; Human Biology focuses specifically on human body systems and genetics. A student can take either, both, or neither — they don't have to be taken as a pair the way Methods and Specialist do.
