WACE Chemistry, Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)
Chemistry ATAR Units 1 and 2 build the foundation every later chemistry topic assumes is solid: atomic structure and bonding first, then the mole concept — the single idea most Year 11 Chemistry students find hardest to internalise, since it requires thinking in terms of colossal numbers of particles rather than the tangible quantities Year 10 dealt with. Unit 2 shifts to solutions, reaction rates and acid-base chemistry, all of which lean heavily on quantitative calculation. A student who gets genuinely comfortable with moles in Unit 1 finds almost everything downstream easier; a student who doesn't tends to struggle at every subsequent calculation-heavy topic.

Where students get stuck: Treating the mole as an abstract formula-plugging exercise rather than what it actually is — a very large counting number, like "dozen" but for chemistry. Students who never build that intuition struggle with every mole calculation that follows, not just this topic.
Chemical equations and stoichiometry
Using balanced chemical equations and stoichiometry to calculate reacting quantities.
Energy changes in reactions
Explaining and calculating the energy changes that accompany chemical reactions.

Where students get stuck: Rounding intermediate values during a multi-step titration calculation. Small rounding errors compound across the several steps a titration calculation typically requires, and this is a common, avoidable source of a wrong final answer.
How it is assessed
- Unit 1 and Unit 2 are entirely school-assessed — there is no external exam in Year 11.
- A satisfactory result in both units is required to move on to Unit 3 and Unit 4 in Year 12.
- Reporting is against the WACE unit grade for each unit, not an ATAR score — the ATAR is calculated from Year 12 results only.

- Has this syllabus changed recently?
- WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. Check senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au for the current syllabus version of this specific course before relying on unit content for assessment planning.
- Why do so many students find the mole concept the hardest part of Unit 1?
- Because it requires switching between three completely different scales at once — the everyday scale of grams on a balance, the invisible scale of individual atoms and molecules, and the mole itself as a bridge between them. Nothing in Year 10 Science asks students to move between scales this fluidly, so it takes real, deliberate practice rather than clicking into place naturally.
- Is Chemistry Unit 1 and 2 mostly memorisation or mostly calculation?
- More calculation than most students expect coming from Year 10 Science, particularly from the mole concept onward. There's genuine content to learn — bonding types, periodic trends — but a large share of the marks in Unit 1 and 2 assessments come from multi-step numerical problems, not recall.
