WACE Human Biology, Year 12 (Units 3 and 4)
Unit 3 and 4 Human Biology is where the course earns its reputation as content-heavy: Unit 3 covers how the nervous and endocrine systems coordinate the body and keep it in balance through homeostasis, plus how the immune system defends it. Unit 4 shifts to genetics, biotechnology and human evolution — DNA and gene expression, the lab techniques used to study them, and the evidence for how humans evolved. It's a genuinely content-dense course, and students who keep up with the volume week to week fare far better than those who try to catch up before the exam.
Unit 3
How the body coordinates itself and defends itself, at real physiological depth.

The central and peripheral nervous systems

Homeostasis and feedback loops
Explaining homeostasis through negative feedback mechanisms that keep the body's internal environment stable.
Where students get stuck: Describing a feedback mechanism's direction backwards — confusing what triggers a corrective response with the response itself. Being precise about the sequence (stimulus, detection, response, correction) is what separates a strong homeostasis answer from a vague one.
Thermoregulation (how the body controls temperature)
Applying homeostatic principles specifically to how the body regulates its temperature.
Blood glucose regulation
Explaining how insulin and glucagon regulate blood glucose levels.
Blood gases and pH regulation
Explaining how the body regulates blood gas levels and pH.
How the kidney regulates water (osmoregulation)
Explaining how the kidney regulates water and solute balance in the body.
Pathogens and the body's non-specific defences
Classifying pathogens and describing the body's non-specific (innate) defences against them.
Specific immunity and immunisation
Explaining the specific (adaptive) immune response and how immunisation works with it.
Unit 4
Genetics, biotechnology and the evidence for human evolution.
DNA structure and gene expression
Explaining the structure of DNA and how genes are expressed as proteins.
Mutations and genetic variation
Describing how mutations and other sources create genetic variation within a population.
PCR and gel electrophoresis
Explaining how PCR and gel electrophoresis are used to amplify and analyse DNA.
Bioinformatics and genome analysis
Using bioinformatics tools and concepts to analyse genome data.
Comparing biochemistry and anatomy across species
Using biochemical and anatomical comparisons as evidence of evolutionary relationships between species.
Population genetics and evolution
Explaining how allele frequencies change in a population through evolutionary mechanisms.
Fossil evidence and dating techniques
Using fossil evidence and dating techniques to support the evidence for evolution.
Hominin evolution and tool use
Tracing hominin evolution through changes in locomotion, physical features and tool use.
Where students get stuck: Treating human evolution as a straight line from an ancestor species to modern humans. The real fossil record shows multiple hominin species existing at overlapping times, and questions that test genuine understanding usually probe this branching picture, not a simplified single-line version.
Human variation and migration
Explaining patterns of contemporary human variation in terms of historical migration and dispersal.
How it is assessed
- Unit 3 and Unit 4 combine school assessment, moderated by SCSA, with an external written examination set by SCSA at the end of the year.
- The combined school and examination result is what contributes to the ATAR for this course.
- A course must be completed to at least a C grade average across Units 3 and 4 for the result to count toward the WACE.
Common questions
- Has this syllabus changed recently?
- WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. Check senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au for the current syllabus version of this specific course before relying on unit content for assessment planning.
- Why is there no Year 11 Human Biology page here?
- It's a genuine gap in our current content, not a claim Year 11 Human Biology doesn't exist — it does (Units 1 and 2, typically covering body systems and reproduction), and it's the normal prerequisite for Units 3 and 4. We just haven't written that page yet.
- Is Human Biology considered an easier science than Biology, Chemistry or Physics?
- It has a reputation for being more content-heavy and memorisation-dependent than conceptually difficult, which is a different thing from "easy" — the sheer volume of detail across Unit 3 and 4, especially the nervous and endocrine systems, catches out students who assume a lighter workload.
