WACE Mathematics Applications, Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)
Mathematics Applications is the ATAR maths course built for genuine real-world application rather than the abstract function-and-calculus track Methods follows, and it's a legitimate, rigorous ATAR choice in its own right — not a fallback. Unit 1 covers everyday financial and geometric maths at real depth, including a first look at matrices, which nothing in Year 10 previews. Unit 2 moves into full statistical investigation and non-right-angled trigonometry. It suits students who want maths to stay connected to concrete, calculable situations rather than pure abstraction.

What is a matrix?
Introducing matrices as a way to organise and represent data — genuinely new content, not previewed in Year 10.
Where students get stuck: Treating matrix notation as just a grid of numbers without understanding what operations on it actually mean. The notation is unfamiliar enough that students often can perform the arithmetic correctly while having no sense of what a matrix represents.
Adding and multiplying matrices
Adding, subtracting and multiplying matrices, and understanding why matrix multiplication works the way it does.
Using matrices to solve problems
Applying matrices to real problems, such as representing and solving systems of relationships.
Units, perimeter and area
Applying unit conversions and area calculations to real practical measurement problems.

Unit 2
Statistics becomes a full investigation process, and trigonometry extends beyond right-angled triangles.
The statistical investigation process
Working through the full statistical investigation cycle and classifying different types of data correctly.
Displaying data (histograms, dot plots)
Choosing and constructing appropriate displays for single-variable data.
Mean, median, mode and spread
Calculating and interpreting measures of centre and spread for a data set.
Boxplots and outliers
Constructing boxplots, identifying outliers, and comparing the shape of different distributions.
Where students get stuck: Flagging any unusually large or small value as an outlier without applying the actual outlier rule (typically 1.5 times the interquartile range beyond the quartiles). "It looks unusual" isn't the criterion the course assesses.
Right-angled trigonometry
Consolidating right-angled trigonometry at ATAR-course fluency.
Angles of elevation, depression and bearings
Applying trigonometry to real navigation and surveying problems using bearings and angles of elevation and depression.
The sine rule
Solving non-right-angled triangles using the sine rule, including the ambiguous case.
The cosine rule
Solving non-right-angled triangles using the cosine rule.
Area of a triangle using trigonometry
Calculating the area of a triangle using trigonometry, without needing the height directly.
Linear graphs, gradient and intercept
Working with linear graphs at an applied level, focused on real interpretation of gradient and intercept.
Equation of a line
Finding the equation of a line and using linear models to represent real relationships.
Simultaneous equations
Solving simultaneous linear equations in applied contexts.
How it is assessed
- Unit 1 and Unit 2 are entirely school-assessed — there is no external exam in Year 11.
- A satisfactory result in both units is required to move on to Unit 3 and Unit 4 in Year 12.
- Reporting is against the WACE unit grade for each unit, not an ATAR score — the ATAR is calculated from Year 12 results only.
Common questions
- Has this syllabus changed recently?
- WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. Check senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au for the current syllabus version of this specific course before relying on unit content for assessment planning.
- Is Applications a lesser ATAR maths course than Methods?
- No — it's a different, equally legitimate ATAR course with its own scaling and university relevance, particularly for degrees in business, health sciences and applied fields. The right comparison isn't "harder versus easier", it's whether a student prefers concrete, real-world calculation (Applications) or abstract functions and calculus (Methods).
- Why do matrices suddenly appear with no lead-in from Year 10?
- Because they genuinely are new — nothing in the WA Year 7-10 curriculum previews matrix notation or arithmetic. It's worth treating as a fresh topic requiring real practice time, not something a student should expect to pick up quickly just because the rest of Unit 1 feels familiar.
