WACE Mathematics Foundation, Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)
Mathematics Foundation exists for students who haven't yet met the Year 10 numeracy achievement standard, and it's built entirely around functional numeracy for daily life — whole number operations, handling money confidently, and measurement and time in contexts a student will genuinely encounter after school. It doesn't contribute to the ATAR and isn't meant to; its purpose is making sure a student leaves school able to manage everyday numeracy demands confidently, which is a real and worthwhile goal in its own right.

Whole numbers and money, at a genuinely functional level.
Whole numbers and place value
Building confidence and fluency with whole number place value and the four operations.
Counting money and change
Building practical confidence handling money, giving and checking change, and basic budgeting.
Length, mass and capacity
Measuring and comparing length, mass and capacity using everyday units.
Time and the calendar
Reading time and calendars confidently and applying this to everyday planning.
Unit 2
Fractions, percentages and simple data, kept close to daily application.

Working with straightforward fractions and percentages, and reading simple data displays.
How it is assessed
- Unit 1 and Unit 2 are entirely school-assessed — there is no external exam at any point in this course.
- Foundation courses don't contribute to the ATAR. They're designed for students who haven't yet met the Year 10 achievement standard, with a focus on functional literacy and numeracy.
- Reporting is against the WACE unit grade for each unit.

- Has this syllabus changed recently?
- WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. - What does completing Foundation actually achieve?
- It contributes toward the WACE and, most importantly, toward meeting the numeracy standard the WACE requires — a student who doesn't meet that standard through NAPLAN can meet it through the OLNA or through demonstrated achievement in this course. It's a genuine, necessary pathway, not a lesser one.
- Is Unit 2 really only one listed topic — is that accurate?
