WA Year 8 Science: what your child covers this year
Year 8 Science in Western Australia is the year science goes invisible. Cells, atoms and energy transfer are all things students cannot see, and each one has to be understood through a model rather than an observation. That is a genuine step up in abstraction from Year 7, and it is the most common point at which a student who liked science stops liking it.
Biological sciences
The first look inside living things.
Cells
Cells as the basic unit of living things, including what the main structures inside them do.
Where students get stuck: Memorising organelle names without connecting them to a job. A student who can list them but cannot say what a cell would fail to do without one has not understood it.
Body systems in plants and animals
How specialised systems in flowering plants and in vertebrates carry out particular functions, and how those systems depend on each other.
Chemical sciences
Atoms arrive, and with them the distinction that underpins all of senior chemistry.
What atoms are made of
What atoms are made of and how that structure is represented in diagrams.
Elements and compounds
Telling the difference between a substance made of one kind of atom and one made of atoms chemically joined together.
Where students get stuck: Confusing a compound with a mixture. Both look like "more than one thing", and the difference — whether the substances are chemically bonded — is not visible.
Metals and non-metals
Sorting elements by their physical properties, which is the first step toward reading the periodic table in Year 9.
Physical vs chemical change
Whether a change produces a genuinely new substance or just a new form of the same one.
Where students get stuck: The classic trap is treating "it looks different now" as evidence of a chemical change. Melting and dissolving both look dramatic and are neither.
Earth and space sciences
Earth treated as a system that changes, not a backdrop.
Plate boundaries and the rock cycle
How processes at the edges of tectonic plates connect to the way rocks form, break down and re-form over long timescales.
Where students get stuck: Timescale. Students apply everyday intuitions about speed to processes measured in millions of years, and the explanations stop making sense.
Types of rocks and minerals
Grouping rocks by physical properties, and linking how a rock formed to what it is useful for.
Physical sciences
Energy, and the vocabulary for describing what happens to it.
Kinetic and potential energy
Sorting forms of energy into energy of motion and stored energy.
Energy transfer and transformation
Tracking energy through a simple system — where it moves and what form it changes into.
Where students get stuck: Using "transfer" and "transform" interchangeably. Assessments distinguish them, and the mark is usually lost on the wording rather than the physics.
Heat and electrical energy
A closer look at how heat moves and how electrical energy is transferred and changed into other forms.
Science inquiry
Assessed alongside the content, and often where marks are actually won or lost.
Planning a science investigation
Choosing equipment, managing risk, and designing a method someone else could repeat and get the same result.
Finding patterns and anomalies in data
Finding patterns in results, spotting readings that do not fit, and using evidence to support a conclusion.
Where students get stuck: Conclusions that restate the results instead of answering the original question. This is the single most common lost mark in Year 8 practical reports.
Sources of error in an experiment
Saying specifically what could have gone wrong and what would fix it.
Where students get stuck: "Human error" as a catch-all. It scores nothing. The mark is for naming the specific step and the specific improvement.
How it is assessed
- School-based. There is no external Science exam in Year 8.
- Practical investigation reports usually carry significant weight, and the inquiry skills above are assessed directly.
- Reporting is against the WA achievement standard for Year 8.
Common questions
- Has WA Year 8 Science changed recently?
- WA schools moved to the revised Western Australian Curriculum for Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Technologies in 2026. If you are looking at an older topic list, or a resource written for another state, some of it no longer matches what is taught here.
- Does Year 8 Science affect subject choice later?
- Not directly — subject selection happens in Year 10 for Year 11. But Year 8 is where atoms, cells and energy are introduced, and all three run straight through to the Year 11 and 12 ATAR sciences. A shaky Year 8 tends to show up as a hard Year 11.
- Why is my child suddenly finding science harder?
- Year 8 is the first year where most of what is being studied cannot be seen. Cells, atoms and energy are all understood through models. Students who learned science by observing often need to be explicitly taught how to reason from a model instead.
