WACE Mathematics Essential, Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)
Mathematics Essential is a General course, not an ATAR one — it doesn't contribute to the ATAR, but it's a legitimate, useful pathway for students whose plans after school don't depend on a maths-heavy university entry score. Units 1 and 2 focus on calculation students will genuinely use: estimation, percentages and rates in real contexts, practical measurement, and reading formulas and graphs rather than manipulating them abstractly. It suits students who want maths that stays close to daily life and the workplace.
Unit 1
Calculation and measurement, grounded in real, everyday use.
Estimation and order of operations
Building fluency and confidence with core calculation, including sensible estimation.
Percentages and rates
Applying percentages and rates to real, everyday situations rather than abstract exercises.
Length, area, volume and units
Applying measurement and unit conversion to genuinely practical situations.
Formulas and reading graphs
Substituting into formulas and reading information directly off graphs used in real contexts.
Where students get stuck: Reading a graph's axis labels and scale too quickly. Misreading what a graph's axes actually represent, before any calculation starts, is the single most common source of error at this level — worth checking every time as a first step.
Unit 2
Data and further percentage-based financial calculation.
Representing and comparing data
Constructing and comparing simple data displays for real, everyday data sets.
Discounts, GST and profit
Applying percentage calculations to discounts, GST and profit in real shopping and business contexts.
Rates and ratios
Applying rates and ratios to real practical comparison problems.
Time and motion (speed, distance, time)
Applying calculation to real time, distance and motion problems, such as travel planning.
How it is assessed
- Unit 1 and Unit 2 are entirely school-assessed — there is no external exam in Year 11.
- A satisfactory result in both units is required to move on to Unit 3 and Unit 4 in Year 12.
- General courses don't contribute to the ATAR, but a satisfactory result does count toward completing the WACE.

- Has this syllabus changed recently?
- WACE senior secondary syllabuses are reviewed by SCSA on a rolling basis rather than all at once — there's no single blanket revision date the way there is for the P-10 curriculum. Check senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au for the current syllabus version of this specific course before relying on unit content for assessment planning.
- Does choosing Mathematics Essential close off any future options?
- It doesn't contribute to the ATAR, so if a student later decides they need an ATAR score, they'd need to have also completed an ATAR course. It's the right choice for a student confident their post-school plans don't require an ATAR-contributing maths result, not a default to fall back into without that being deliberate.
- Is Essential just an easier version of Applications?
- Not quite — it's a differently purposed course, focused on functional, everyday numeracy rather than the more abstract statistical and geometric reasoning Applications builds toward. A student who finds Applications genuinely too fast-paced may do better with Essential's pace and practical focus, rather than thinking of it purely as a difficulty downgrade.
