WACE Mathematics Essential, Year 12 (Units 3 and 4)
Unit 3 and 4 Mathematics Essential stays firmly practical: measurement and estimation for real trade and design contexts, reading media graphs and tables critically, and — in Unit 4 — earth geometry, time zones and loan calculations that connect directly to travel and personal finance. It's a genuinely useful course for day-to-day adult numeracy, and it completes the WACE without requiring the abstraction of an ATAR maths course.

Where students get stuck: Accepting a media graph's visual impression at face value without checking the axis scale. A truncated y-axis can make a small change look dramatic, and this course explicitly tests whether a student notices.
Data collection and the statistical process
Working through a simplified, practically-focused statistical investigation process.
Unit 4
Earth geometry, time and personal finance round out the course.
Probability and relative frequency
Estimating probability using relative frequency from real, observed data.
Latitude and longitude
Using latitude and longitude to describe location and calculate distances on Earth.
Time zones and travel
Calculating time differences and travel times across time zones, genuinely relevant for a WA-based student.
Loans, credit and compound interest
Calculating the real cost of loans and credit using compound interest, directly applicable to personal finance.
How it is assessed
- Unit 3 and Unit 4 combine school assessment with an external assessment component set by SCSA.
- General courses don't contribute to the ATAR — the result counts toward completing the WACE.
- Reporting is against the WACE unit grade for each unit.
